Merriam-Webster definition 1b:

to get rid of (something troublesome, menacing, or oppressive)

“so this is how you swim inward,
so this is how you flow outward,
so this is how you pray.”

– Mary Oliver, “Five A.M. in the Pinewoods”

some thoughts

‘to get rid of’…feeling ‘off’…to get into alignment.

externalization and acknowledgement of the feeling may be part of it. the feeling is expressed without forcing — no need for explanation, justification, or correction. eventually, as it is becoming clearer what was misaligned, I may write over or cover certain things up (e.g., the confusion, the spiraling, the misunderstanding) or make others more prominent (e.g., the insight, the care, the fun).

flow (the pure enjoyment of the process, the loss of self and time) may be part of it too. perhaps more so. non-linear, undirected expressions…unencumbered by self-consciousness…loosely woven together by aesthetic whims. an intuitive sense of how to find an asymmetric balance.
